Just in time for summer, Camden has welcomed an eating and drinking destination to rival the best in London. Gabeto (a friendly Spanish term for ‘our house’) is now open in Camden Market (Chalk Farm Road side) in a historic Victorian stable block transformed into an all-day bar and restaurant with daytime workspace, casual and formal eating areas, a cocktail bar, and a large terrace.
Head Chef Lee Andrews, formerly of Chiltern Firehouse, has created a modern brasserie menu that mixes carefully sourced British ingredients with a hint of Latin flavours. Signature eats include tacos, small plates (think beetroot-cured salmon; chorizo scotch egg; and Cornish crab and avocado), as well as rare-breed steaks from the charcoal oven.
The day begins at breakfast or brunch with dishes such as the Scottish lobster tail with a pan-forked omelette, perhaps matched with treats from the dedicated Bloody Mary menu. All-day favourites on the menu include beetroot and goats curd with roasted heritage pickled beetroot and pistachio; or ham hock terrine, as well as the likes of mango salad, tomatoes, carrots, coconut, roasted walnut; and smoked cauliflower steak with cauliflower purée, girolles, romanesco, baby aubergine and truffle. Fresh seafood is another strength with grilled octopus and whole lobster headlining the offering.
There are also food pods and a regularly changing line-up of street food (curated by General Manager Nicol Harrison-Dwyer, who joins Gabeto from Dinerama) on the outdoor terrace. Large umbrellas and heaters ensure the outside area can be used all year round.
The Long Stable itself is a striking two-storey space with vaulted brick ceilings and timber trusses, all original to the site. Much of the original brick and timber will be left exposed, then matched with modern art and colourful retro-style furniture, with long luxe seating and large booths blending the original and contemporary fittings. Guests are invited to pop their laptops on a sturdy zinc-topped table, kick back with cocktails on an overstuffed Chesterfield banquette, or eat dinner beneath statement sculpture lighting. Bar manager Tony Safqi has put together a short but interesting wine list and a lively cocktail selection with plenty of Central and South American flavours.
An industrial-style feature spiral staircase leads guests to the first-floor restaurant where high-level dining booths and eclectic furniture are fused with naturally elegant period features and gallery art. Synonymous with the area, John Bulley, the renowned artist behind the famous Camden Lock bridge, has been commissioned to create a set of bespoke feature murals. Large groups are accommodated in any of Gabeto’s main areas and the whole venue is available to hire for semi private and private dinners and events of up to 300 guests.
Open past midnight daily, Gabeto is the ultimate spot for a late bite or nightcap. A carefully curated playlist of classics and the new will be London centric and reflective of Camden’s rich musical heritage.
Opening hours will be 8am-1am Monday to Thursday, 8am-2am on Friday, 9:30am-2am on Saturday, and 9:30am-1am on Sunday.
